Be a Foster Carer

Every year, tens of thousands of children across the UK rely on Foster Carers during periods when they cannot live with their own families. That means thousands of new Foster Carers are required every year. Could you be one of them?

Foster Carers are ordinary people who open their home to provide children with the highest standard of care. They offer children love, warmth and a positive experience of family life to help children achieve a successful and happy life.

There is no such thing as a typical Foster Carer. Like the children they look after, Foster Carers come from all sorts of different backgrounds, cultures and religions.

Tutis Foster Care welcomes Foster Carers from a variety of backgrounds, whatever their relationship status, sexual orientation, skin colour, cultural background or religious beliefs.

Tutis Foster Care employ a diverse range of Foster Carers to reflect children in care and offer as much placement choice as possible.

Almost anyone can apply to foster:

  • You can be claiming benefits or in work
  • You can own your house or rent (as long as it’s stable)
  • You can be single, married or have a partner
  • You can apply to foster whatever your cultural background and religious beliefs
  • Your sexuality won’t prevent you from fostering
  • You can continue fostering past retirement age, as long as your health is good
  • You don’t need any formal qualifications

Qualities you will need:

  • To genuinely like and want to care for children and young people.
  • Positive energy, resilience and empathy. Caring for children and young people will require patience and creativity, as they are likely to have experienced trauma and distress.
  • The ability to talk and listen to children.
  • The ability to be able to work as part of a team with Social Workers, Teachers, and Health Workers around the needs of the child placed with you
  • To be able to work with birth families, and offer support to parents if required.

Interested in fostering? Complete our simple online form or call 01946 65686 to find out more and apply to be a Foster Carer.

Personal Circumstances:

  • A spare bedroom which can accommodate a single bed, chest of drawers and wardrobe as a minimum. Your home can be rented or owned.
  • To be aged 25 or over. There is no upper age limit, but you will need to be in good health.

Being a Foster Carer requires ‘time’, not only for the practicalities of caring for a child / young person but the ability to attend regular meetings, and meet all the needs of a child / young person. This however does not preclude you from having ‘other’ employment, as this will be taken into consideration as part of the assessment process.

Other considerations will include your ability to travel, health, and financial security.
